Sculpture used in an exterior setting has a long history. From ancient representatons of dieties, to gargoyles on cathedrals and heroic memorials to fallen soldiers, sculpture has been used to remind us of someone, or something. Abstract sculpture takes the poetic approach that its purpose is to suggest an idea, a thought or an emotion. Unlike poetry though, sculpture exists as an entity in space and relates to its environment in a unique way. Landscape sculpture, properly situated in the outdoor world, complements the natural with the manmade. This can heighten the appreciation of both facets. The glass used in Brian Russell's sculptures captures light in a dynamic fashion, its colors and effects shifting as the day progresses and the seasons change. Landscape Sculpture punctuates the garden, giving pause and emphasis to the lyrics.
